Raising a high quality product has become a top priority at the farm. We feel that it is important to have a low stress livestock handling method here at SooBrook Farms. You can be sure that any animal raised at SooBrook Farms will be treated humanely and have the best quality of life we can provide.

The locker will contact you directly with cutting instructions as everything is custom.

The locker we use is D&T Meats in Pipestone, MN.

Processing fee is paid to the locker upon pickup, and the price varies by hanging weight of the animal.

SooBrook Farms is currently operated by Darren and Darres Nelson. The farm got its start in 1913 when the guy’s great grandpa, Carl Nelson, moved to the area from Iowa.

Carl built a successful farm, but his unexpected passing in 1946 left his son Curtis to run the farm. Curt was just 18 at the time of his father’s passing. With only an 8th grade education, knowledge of what Carl had done, and lots of trial and error, Curt continued to grow the operation. Curt took special interest in cattle and had a keen eye for quality animals.

In the early 1970’s Curt had two sons that were ready to join the operation. Darrell, Greg, and Curt joined together to form SooBrook farms. They farmed together until 1984 when Greg decided to pursue ministry. This provided an opportunity for Curt’s youngest son, Todd, to join the operation. These three farmed together along with hired help.

Due to the nature of a family farm, Darrell’s kids played a big part in helping work on the farm while they were growing up, gaining experience and knowledge alongside their Dad, Grandpa, and Uncle. After earning a degree from Lake Area Technical Institute (Now Lake Area Technical College) in 2002, Darren, Darrell’s son, returned to help on the farm expand the farm’s cattle operation. In February of 2019, Darrell was diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away in April of 2021. During Darrell’s illness, another son, Darres, helped to try to fill the giant footsteps Darrell left. During this transition, Todd decided to step back after harvest in 2020 and let Darren and Darres run the farm.

Fortunately, Grandpa Curt helped to guide Darren and Darres for the next two years. He spent his 94th birthday doing exactly what he wanted to do: running his combine all day harvesting soybeans. Curt got to meet Jesus on March 1st, 2023. His 77 years of farming provided a wealth of knowledge and experience that the boys were able to glean from him and utilize to help develop their farming knowledge.

Like his grandfather, Darren has a keen eye for quality cattle. He is our livestock guy and has spent countless hours learning his trade. He has continued to develop the herd into, what we feel, is one of the best in the area.

It is our sincere hope that our farm will continue to grow as a true “family” farm to be passed to the next generation and longer. The fifth generation of Nelson’s is now working on the farm and beginning to learn about the variety of information that is necessary to running a successful farm. Under Darren’s supervision, his two sons care for the grass fed cattle and lambs, and his two daughters take care of the bottle calves and farm pets. Both Darren and Darres’s kids have helped with field operations and chores when they are available. They refer to themselves as “The B Team” durning harvest and have been a great help. They already have dreams for their part in continuing this farming legacy.

We hope that getting to know us and our story better will help you to gain confidence in us as your beef provider. We are committed to providing you the kind of meat products that we serve our family and friends.
